There are so many accessible modifications that can be done to bring joy and comfort to your home, whether modifying an existing space or when moving to a new location.
Rugs
Make sure all loose rugs have a correctly sized rug pad beneath them to ensure they don’t shift or move on your floor surface. Rug thickness also shouldn’t exceed ½” to minimize tripping hazards and allow anyone in a wheelchair or with a walker to easily glide across.
Seating
Seat heights on upholstered furniture closer to 19” H (nothing below 18” H) are recommended for ease of getting up and down. If you aren’t purchasing something new, local upholstery shops can modify existing cushions for a minimal cost. Having armrests on pieces will help provide an additional gripping surface whether sitting or standing. A sturdy wood or metal frame will also hold up best overtime. If reupholstering or getting new furniture, look for something with a performance, stain treated fabric for easy clean-up of spills.
Tables and Cabinets
Avoid sharp edges and anything with glass. It is a good idea to ensure any taller items against a wall are secured to the wall to avoid anything tipping. Consider tables with (4) legs instead of a pedestal to allow for wheelchair access should that need arise.
Bathrooms
Reach out to a local handyman to install grab bars where needed. Whether modifying a bathroom or working with what you have, consider a built-in or loose shower seat. Ensure floor tile in the shower is non-slip. If you have an existing surface, there are mats available to assist with slip resistance. Get a shower caddy to ensure your bathing/showering items are easily accessible. Get a hook installed nearby the shower/tub, so your towel is within reach.
Kitchens and Cabinets
Make sure daily items are placed in lower cabinets and more easily accessible places. A handyman or organization professional can install pull-outs for deep cabinets, so you don’t have to move things around to access other items behind.
Colors
Color in design is tied to well-being and so many other things. Green promotes healing and relaxation. Blue can help reduce stress and some browns can promote balance. Red is associated with energy and yellow can bring happiness and warmth. Local painters, color consultants and designers are a great place to start if you are trying to find the right color for your space.
Lighting
Ensuring your space has enough lighting can really impact the ability to move around easily. If you are limited on overhead lighting, get some lamps and work with an electrician or handyman to ensure you have accessible switching on all items and avoid reaching behind furniture, etc., to turn these items on.
Creating a space that’s comfortable, accessible, and feels like home is so important to our well-being and comfort. With a few easy steps, you can ensure your space is ready for comfortable day-to-day living!
